The Power of the People
On my third cup of coffee this morning (to get going on this first day of 2017), I thought it would be a good time to post my photograph made inside Gaudi's famous masterwork-in-progress... La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. I stood in this incredible place taking in the light and the colors and began to think about what the guide said on the way over. Gaudi spent most of his life as an architect and artist working on this cathedral and died way before its completion. It has been a work in progress for almost 200 years and the outside of the structure is still surrounded by scaffolding. The people of Barcelona hope to complete the project by 2020.
The construction of this structure has taken so long because the building funds have always come from private donations of the people of Barcelona... not from the Vatican. The project was also delayed for decades when the Spanish dictator Franco was in power. I call this post "The Power of the People" because it's a great example of what "we the people" can do in spite of bureaucracies of any kind whether they originate from a repressive government or organized religion itself. Freedom... isn't that what we're all looking for?
