The Legacy of Mao Tse-tung

I took this photograph in Beijing, China a few years ago and I saw it again on the news last week. Everything looked exactly as it did when I was there. The buildings, fences, signs, etc. are centered, lined up, controlled. Behind me were several hundred people scurrying around in Tiananmen Square. I thought it unusual that so many people in one place could be so quiet. Reverence was in the air. Mao Tse-tung was an autocratic leader and since discussions abound in the news and on the internet lately about autocratic leaders and their rise to power worldwide, I thought it would be constructive to re-visit this particular leader and this image.
"...(Mao's) harsh methods and insensitivity to anyone who didn't give him full faith and allegiance have been widely rebuked as self-defeating."
This sounds a lot like what we're experiencing today in America.
